A refreshed and restructured suite of Professional Standards were formally enacted on 2 August 2021

These materials will help you to understand the changes to the Professional Standards and the landscape in which these took place.

The Professional Standards for Teachers were first established in 2000. They were reformed in 2012 and enacted in 2013 as a reconceptualised model of teacher professionalism supported by the introduction of Professional Update. The discussion to review the 2012 Professional Standards began in 2017 with teachers across Scotland actively engaged in shaping the Professional Standards 2021.

Professor Graham Donaldson joined GTC Scotland for our Annual Lecture 2021, during which the Professional Standards 2021 were launched and Professor Donaldson emphasised the importance of professional learning.

Professional Standards 2012

The 2012 Professional Standards are to be used as a comparative tool following the enactment of the refreshed and revised Professional Standards on 2 August 2021. They should no longer be used to support teacher professional learning. These Professional Standards will be available to help comparisons until August 2022.
