GTC Scotland welcomes incorporation of UNCRC; highlights professional guide for teachers

16 March 2021

The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTC Scotland) has welcomed the incorporation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into Scots law. In anticipation of this historic moment, GTC Scotland published a Professional Guide for teachers, A children's rights-based approach, in partnership with Education Scotland.

The UNCRC places a legal duty on all public bodies to promote and uphold children’s rights. For education professionals, it is important to understand what this entails. A children's rights-based approach provides the opportunity for teachers to reflect on their actions and consider any professional learning needs in relation to strengthening a children’s rights-based approach and effective learner participation in the classroom.

Dr Pauline Stephen, Chief Executive and Registrar at GTC Scotland said, “GTC Scotland is proud to celebrate this historic moment with children, adults, teachers and our education partners across Scotland.

“As part of our advisory role as the professional body for all of Scotland’s teachers we have published a professional guide intended to help teachers embed a children’s rights-based approach and effective learner participation into their teaching.  A rights-based approach to education promotes improved relationships, ethos and attainment and achievement.

“The guide is part of a suite of Professional Guides being published by GTC Scotland on key themes and topics which are designed to enhance teacher professionalism.”

Notes to Editors

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), is an International Treaty that seeks to protect the welfare and development of children. It applies to all children from birth to 18, and is universal, unconditional, indivisible, inherent and inalienable; children do not have to ‘earn’ rights through behaving in a particular way – rights should not be linked to responsibilities.

A children’s rights-based approach: A professional guide for teachers, is part of a series of guides produced by GTC Scotland. Read all the guides
